At the parents and players meetings the HP manager was heard to say that she personally over saw every selection meeting , must have been back early from holidays . As someone whom has spoken up before and quite recently I do believe there are implications , hence remaining anonymously here although I would love nothing more than to put my name to this .
A complete overall is required

Does anyone know how to sign up to be a selector for state teams and possibly a coach? Are there any pre requisites that you must have to do these things?

OSS are you suggesting that there is "Black list" at HV. Lots of parents feel that as there is no set guidelines for selection that this happens - if you open your mouth to complain you are targeted. Is this something that seems apparent with the new HP manager who has never played hockey and was away on holidays during the final under18 and under15 selections seems strange that as the one of the main parts of their job was to administer and run selection and they were on holiday? ?? There is definitely a need for a set procedure for trials to be put in place regardless of whether the high performance manager is physically present or not. There needs to be a uniform approach so that trials are conducted in an objective manner, especially if Hockey Victoria seems to endorse the involvement of parents as selectors and coaches. Working with the VIS, trials procedures should determine the use of fitness tests and levels to be achieved. Skills sets that need to be shown should be tested - e.g. strikers need to be able tomahawk, backs able to do overheads. Therefore selections would be more transparent. We seem to be copying a lot of the NSW approaches to hockey with regional academies etc but now we may need to look at how other states select their teams using objective criteria such as fitness testing. Have heard from goalkeepers in one of the age groups that the conduct of the trials was ridiculous. Keepers were eliminated on the basis of a player's performance in small games at the second trial. These games were played on a quarter sized field with witches hats marking the goals. How can keepers be compared if they are not put in a common trial situation in a properly marked D and a full size goal with the same level of field player hitting against them? The final keeper trial was conducted on a strip at the back of the field on S2 in the dark behind the lights. There was obviously no properly marked D. At no time were all keepers in the net at the same time and put through the same exercises to compare skills such as agility, slide tackling or aerials. Some keepers were in the drills for 20 minutes consecutively while other keepers were in the drill for only 5 minutes having come from little action in a field game. It is not fair to compare the performance of someone who has been continuously in a drill for 15 minutes with someone who is fresh in the net. The most ridiculous trialling procedure ever seen. Under 12 primary school trials are conducted better than this, as would any junior zone team selection. The selector copying the keepers' shots on the sideline has been mentioned previously and no one was sure whether this was deliberate to cause a distraction. This is where Hockey Victoria should step in and ensure that trials are conducted to test all players in a fair and comparable manner and the selection criteria backed by sports science and selectors have relevant hockey experience. Is it not possible to get Premier League field players and keepers to select at Under 15 and 18 levels? Surely some of the nomination fee could go to paying these PL players to do this?

Where are the guidelines

Yes if we adopt proper guidelines , ask for nominations of selectors, have minimum requirements for coaches, selectors and officials and have selections that are accountable maybe all of this on the forum will finish. if parents really want to coach, then they should not be selectors. if as some have said that some of these people are the best there is then maybe it's not even fair that they are only coaching their own kids maybe they should be allocated to another team? So if they want to coach then coach the opposite team to their own son or daughters. Hockey Victoria is pushing for clubs to have Level 1 coaches coach junior shield this should mean that state coaches should at least have a minimum level 2 qualification maybe appoint a seasoned coach and a younger elite player as assistant to have then the both can help develop players to their potential. hockey Victoria have said that they have been working on a open transparent selection policy since the new operations manager has arrived - where is It? When the under15 s were originally asked to nominate the initial letter of acceptance from HV stated feedback would be provided at each stage - the HP manager then verbally advised parents that feedback would only be at the last stage why did this happen - what ever the reason it does create doubt in parents minds that the process may not be fair and reasonable. Especially when the HP manager said to the parents that no complaining to her would be accepted. I wonder why this was all verbal and not written and published? to move on HV needs to have clear selection guidelines, set standards for running selection, nomination processes and set standards for selectors, coaches and officials and finally clear guidelines that are open to all the see.

Obviously there are not many pre requisites to coach a state team considering the guy sisters coached a state indoor team. How that decision was made is beyond me.

"Hockey Victoria’s 2014 AGM will be live streamed this Wednesday to provide all affiliates from regional areas unable to make it to the State Netball Hockey Centre the chance to tune in. The meeting will commence at 7pm however at 6.30pm there will be a live interview with Hockey Victoria’s CEO Andrew Skillern. If you have any questions for Andrew in preparation for this Wednesday night's interview at 6.30pm please direct all questions using the official Hockey Victoria twitter @hockeyvictoria and send quote #askandrew."
So are people going to watch? Are people going to #askandrew about any of the concerns they have raised on here regarding HV? Put up or shut up time I would have thought.....

Ok so I watched the AGM , not very interesting , too much pomp and ceremony . The really interesting part arrived today , the 2014 HV Annual Report . Blah , blah . blah until page 40 . Some very interesting reading especially around revenue raised . Fees raised from Trials and nominations 2013 $26,273 2014 $50,347 , nearly double ! were there really that many more people trialling or just more fees ?
Have a look for yourselves , the fees raised by Elite Performance programs should raise some eyebrows , having children involved in these myself I can unfortunately say we did not get value for money . Love to know where and how this money will be spent , certainly not by subsidising the cost of belonging to a State Team .
State team cost are out of control , more expensive to Represent Vic than any other State .

selection criteria is a must if HV want to move forward and it must be made available to all. NSW state on the website all selection criteria they also state on there list of players selected that all players will be doing the beep test at the first training session and any player not getting to the minimum standard required will be removed from that team. NSW are at the top because of the athletic requirements to remain in a state team players know this in advance so there is no excuse for not being at the required level. Is it extreme that u13 and u15 players have high levels to reach, possibly however these are teams that are the best in the country with players striving to one day be national representatives, this expectation at a young age prepares players as they get older and start making national squads it's no wonder NSW have so many players in national squads compared to HV. It's great to see the HV u21 women have a minimum requirement for the beep test on there first trial interesting though that the requirement is 10.8 which is below NSW requirement for there u15 women.... However it's a start only interesting thing will be if the selectors follow through with not selecting players based on this criteria. Havnt seen any criteria for u21 men next question relates to the rumour that an u15 player that didn't get through the second round of trials was approached by a state coach and asked to be a train on??? What about those that actually made it to the final trial?? Rumour or not?

Beep test results are one indication but not to be relied upon exclusively. Maybe they are used by NSW but I doubt NSW would see this as the major factor keeping them ahead of states like Victoria. NSW hockey is different from Victoria in many ways. - Country hockey is stronger in NSW
- Indoor Hockey is given major support by the NSW regions and the players
- The better junior players in NSW double up the age groups more often
- Professional development of the coaches in NSW is perhaps taken to a higher level
- The hockey community in NSW is arguably larger and more supportive
Many suggestions from parents and administrators on this thread on what can be done but solutions are no closer as very little of what is written is aimed at working together. As mentioned recently on this thread, representative hockey is very expensive so if you expect to get the best playing for Victoria you will need to provide support and this regard money is not the number one factor - just ask a representative player how much thanks they are given for dedicating their time to hockey in Victoria. Clearly Hockey in Victoria needs impartial coaches and selectors but if the best available happen to be parents it is still possible to get a good result if they surrounded by good systems and people to ensure everyone is treated according to their merits.

Senior Games scheduled for 8:30am surely not. This has to be an error..if so would have thought fixtures were checked before going up.

i don't know if Hockey Victoria are really interested but this weekend u13, u15 and u17 country teams from Victoria have headed to Melbourne to play the Junior Country Championships - seems to nothing about it on HV s own web page and Facebook. A lot of players from the country head to Melbourne teams to play senior hockey and for some this is the start. if HV are really about promoting hockey in Victoria i would have expected to see something supporting hockey in the country. Other states seem to support country hockey a little more !!

Some very interesting posts here over the last few months. Great that everyone has a different opinion and some good points have been raised.
Food for thought on the state of Elite Hockey for everyone that nit picks on small details.
New CEO only started 12 months ago. New Operations manager only started 8 months ago. New High Performance manager only started 12 months ago. HV Staff levels have nearly tripled over the last few years (new Inclusion dept and game development dept) New High Performance department really only got off the ground 10 months ago. Prior to that I believe it was just the state teams department In the last 12 months there has been: - A new Academy program for 250 kids, Two new Upskilling/ Elite Skill development programs started. Over twenty Academy coaches employed, Three year level state teams namely U/13 15 & 18 have expanded to two teams (double the number of volunteers now required) New AIO state teams selection program started, New regional relationships being developed, Futures Program (now Emerging Viking / vipers) has be redeveloped and Now two new full time coaches are about to be employed All this Info is available on the HV website
Sounds like the whole organisation (From a High Performance / state teams Perspective) has basically only been running for 8 - 10 months, and has undergone some major changes. My thoughts are great job by Hockey Vic on massive improvements in such a short time. If some minor points are not quite right yet then lets cut them a bit of slack and look at the overall greater opportunities available to Junior athletes in Victoria.
Compared to when my kids where going through the system, the training and opportunities have improved dramatically
My hat goes off to Andrew Skillern and all his staff.

this person knows a lot about HV, why are they posting here? is it HV staff? it sounds very very defensive. fee paying participants are jaded by HV and would not defend HV if HV high performance is accused of bias with examples, to say "we oppose bias" and expect people to accept is pathetic the rationalisations for selecting a dutch U21 player are just as weak

I agree with hpfather,
Lets give HV a go and stop bagging them out. I too watch the changes shown on their website and also from discussions around the grounds and I like what I see.
Lets get behind them and help them develop our great sport.

ROFL such a stupid post. "This person is giving informed opinions, why are they posting here"... Quit crying because you/your kid didn't make state selections. Funny you can say that the defense of a Dutchman making u21s is weak when the arguments against are pathetic. Watch him in the 2 Hawthorn games that have been streamed and if you still don't think he's going to add a lot to under 21's then I'm glad your only contribution to high performance is having a cry and blaming HV on anonymous forums.

This is all very well, but the number of people funding all this expansion is the same, so the cost to play hockey just goes up and up. The cost to participate in a State Team has also gone through the roof. The so called High Performance area has turned into a revenue generating exercise. Why don't HV enter 3 state teams per age group and introduce an U16 and U17 development State Team, get parents to coach State Teams and change the uniforms every year so you need a new one every year. $ 3-4K to play in a junior state team, ......dream on, its just a scam for Gullible Parents.

So with all these new staff why is it that HV cannot post on Facebook or the website that the Premier League games scheduled for tonight on pitch 2 at SnHC have been postponed??

It's clear from this thread that the overhaul of state selection process is required ( not just juniors). Whether there is real or perceived bias needs to be addressed. The lack of clear policy and guidelines is a failure of the administration. The failure of the hockey community to voice these concerns more loudly is a failure on all our part. The same clubs and names keep appearing again and again, its time to stand up and take some action HV.
